If you ask today’s teenagers where the world’s largest stadium is, the answer may not be a physical place — it might be an online game lobby. E-sports is a short for Electronic sports, which is a form of competition usually using video games. It has evolved into a digital arena where Gen Z spends time learning, competing, and connecting. Generally, E-sports often takes the form of organized, multiplayer video games competitions. Players are playing individually or as teams, againsting each other to win the prize. Whether it’s a team scrimming in a PC game like Valorant or a mobile player climbing ranks in games like Honor of Kings, this digital playground has become a defining part of youth culture.
In many international schools today, E-sports is becoming part of student life. From after-school gaming clubs to friendly tournaments between grades, more students are discovering that competitive gaming builds teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. What used to be just a hobby is now becoming a space where students collaborate just like in traditional sports teams.
On the other hand, E-sports is a huge fashion and becoming a professional job. Today, major E-sports tournaments attract millions of live viewers with various games and generate billions of dollars through sponsorships, media rights, and merchandise. Data shows that the global esports market is projected to reach approximately US$4.8 billion by 2025, with sponsorship and advertising revenue alone exceeding US$1 billion. For example, Esports World Cup 2025 will feature 25 different games, which boasts a total prize pool of US$70 million, while other major organizations and databases list a much broader selection.
Overall, E-sports offers great opportunities to attract and retain a global following. It represents a unique sports style: fast-paced, international, and deeply digital competitions. It is not just about winning those games – it builds up a connection for worldwide audiences and players. In this digital arena, borders fade, and every match becomes a moment that millions experience together, whether they are watching from a stadium seat or a phone screen halfway across the world.
