The High School SLO Awards Ceremony, originally scheduled for Thursday, October 30, 2025, was canceled and postponed to the end of the semester in December. Teachers and students expressed different opinions about this change — some thought it was a good decision, others disagreed with the school’s choice, and some just didn’t care.
Fiona, a Grade 12 student, disagreed with the cancellation. Fiona believes that the certificates awarded at the ceremony are very important and helpful for G12 students’ college applications. She also suggested that the award ceremony should be scheduled at a time that doesn’t disrupt anyone’s plans in the future.
However, some students felt indifferent about the issue. Abby, another Grade 12 student, said she actually felt quite normal and was not really sure what this award was even for. She added that it was a big mistake to schedule it after school, suggesting it should instead be held after lunch or during the third period.
According to the interviews, teachers were supportive of the cancellation. Mr. Zhang stated that students need to show more effort in order to earn the awards: “To give us enough reason to reward their work since the start of the semester, I think one quarter is too short. I need a whole semester to see who’s really making progress.” He also suggested, “I’m busy in my class, and actually, I think we should cancel the quarterly award ceremony — maybe we should just hold it once a semester or even once a year.”
