Sex is the biologically determined trait of a person, depending on chromosomes, organs, rainbows, glitter, and so on. And gender is often time an expression of sex, but not always. And clothes? They’re just fabric. To let 3 of these separate things define each other and create a forced symbiotic relationship upon humanity is simply irrational and is acting as a vile factor halting artistic expression.
By limiting the full experience of human expression, society is putting human beings in non-existent boxes disguised as “social expectations,” and when people dress for conformity rather than just for the sake of themselves, first of all, it creates a large segregation between males and females. If you are someone who believes in gender equality but still associates clothes with gender, you’re basically defeating and contradicting your own stance. Using traditional masculinity or femininity as an excuse to push prejudice against people who don’t conform to those societal rules is deeply rooted in both misandry and misogyny because, as aforementioned, fashion is just fabric and has nothing to do with your gender, and the concept of masculinity or femininity is subjective, human-made, and is constantly changing anyway.
For example, Wigs, makeup, and extravagant fashion were all initially designed for men in so many historical eras, but now it’s flipped its way through, having a much more feminine connotation in the 21st century, and this just proved the point I made, and I guarantee you this will always be changing as long as time is real and humans exist. 2nd of all, as I’m speaking right now, we are living in an age of collective decline in fashion and creativity as human beings, and it’s not a good thing at all. And I believe gendering clothes has contributed its part in this disaster, because please tell me why our masculinity and femininity have become so fragile to the point where we’re afraid to be called “gay” because of some fabric we wear, and as a result, more and more and more people are dressing for comfort and convenience rather than truly expressing themselves.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all of us, some fashion stables are still uprising, but it has more of a “dress for an occasion” connotation rather than dressing because you want to, and I might actually understand why. Because around 50 years ago, your looks were everything, and people dressed to be able to get into clubs and social functions, but now I believe the way you dress holds less significance, and there should be nothing wrong with that as long as there are no underlying toxic reasons.
In conclusion, degendering clothes will help people be truly themselves, letting their creativity and artistic expression thrive while also leading the human race to a world with more gender equality. We’ve done a good job normalizing women in suits and trousers, and it’s not seen as cross-dressing, is it? If I, a cisgendered female, is able to pull up to a function in a full suit and a neck tie and avoid cross-dresser allegations, a man in what is perceived to be a skirt, should be able to do the same. And that’s on degendering clothes to unlock your full potential, and this is why gender benders will always be so cool.
